Is Tarragon Oil Safe for Dogs?
Why it’s a problem
Tarragon oil carries estragole (methyl chavicol) and anethole, compounds that irritate the digestive tract and have raised liver concerns at concentrated doses. The dried herb in food amounts is not comparable to the distilled oil. Dogs that steal food seasoned heavily with tarragon usually get off with stomach upset; the oil is the serious form.
How to keep your pet safe
Store the oil with your other concentrates, not in the spice rack, and never apply it to skin or fur. Wipe counters after cooking with tarragon so counter-surfing dogs do not lick residue. Ask your vet before giving any herbal supplement that lists tarragon extract.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, lethargy, loss of appetite
When to call the vet
Call your veterinarian with the estimated amount and timing if oil was swallowed. Do not induce vomiting unless a professional directs it.
Common questions
Can dogs eat food cooked with tarragon?
A dish lightly seasoned with the herb usually causes no more than an upset stomach if stolen. The essential oil is many times stronger and is the real hazard.
Is tarragon oil in pet dental sprays safe?
Formulated pet products use tiny diluted amounts for the species on the label. The raw oil bypasses those safeguards entirely.
