Is Ketotifen allergy eye drops (Zaditor) Safe for Cats?
Why it’s a problem
The drug volume in a single bottle is small, so a cat that licks the tip or swallows a squirt usually gets drowsiness, drooling, or mild vomiting. Cats that bite into bottles may also swallow plastic fragments. Heavier sedation has been reported when more of the contents are ingested.
How to keep your pet safe
Store eye drops inside a zipped case rather than loose in a handbag cats explore. Never apply human eye drops to a cat’s eyes — feline eye problems need a veterinary diagnosis. Discard cracked bottles where pets cannot reach them.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, drowsiness, vomiting, wobbliness; larger ingestions: deep sedation or, less commonly, agitation.
When to call the vet
Call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline if your cat licked the bottle contents or swallowed plastic pieces. Persistent drowsiness or any mouth injury should be checked in person.
Common questions
My cat licked the tip of my eye drop bottle — should I worry?
A lick from the tip usually causes little more than drooling or mild drowsiness. Watch your cat, and call your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline if it becomes very sedate or vomits repeatedly.
Can I use Zaditor for my cat’s itchy eyes?
No — cat eye conditions need veterinary diagnosis, and human allergy drops are not formulated for feline eyes. Your vet can prescribe a suitable option if one is needed.
